1. Purpose of This Safety Manual
Section titled “1. Purpose of This Safety Manual”This document outlines the minimum safety information required to operate the NeoDen YY1 pick & place machine in The Fab Lab. It focuses on:
- Hazards that can cause injury or damage
- Required protective measures
- Emergency response procedures
This document does not teach you how to operate the machine. Refer to the linked Operations Manual for usage instructions.
2. Who May Use This Machine
Section titled “2. Who May Use This Machine”This machine may be used by:
- All Fab Lab Users
Usage conditions:
- Staff Presence
- User must have acknowledged this safety manual
- User must have completed required machine orientation
- Machine must be scheduled through approved booking system
3. Primary Hazards
Section titled “3. Primary Hazards”Be aware of the following hazards when using this machine:
- Electrical Hazard: Risk of electric shock from internal power supply, exposed wiring during maintenance, or damaged power cables.
- Mechanical Hazard: Rapid movement of the placement head (X/Y axis gantry), z-axis nozzle motion, feeder loading mechanisms, conveyor movement (if installed), and keeping hands clear during operation.
4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Section titled “4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)”The following PPE is required when operating this machine:
- No special PPE is required beyond standard Fab Lab attire.
5. General Safety Rules
Section titled “5. General Safety Rules”Always follow these rules when using this machine:
- Never bypass safety covers or protective panels
- Never operate with the housing removed
- Keep hands clear of the placement head during motion
- Never reach into the machine while it is running
- Do not leave the machine unattended during active placement cycles
- Ensure feeders are secured before starting a job
- Confirm emergency stop location before powering on
- Do not attempt hardware repairs unless authorized
- If unsure at any time, STOP and ask staff.
6. Emergency Stop & Safety Features
Section titled “6. Emergency Stop & Safety Features”Know the location and function of the following before operating the machine:

Main Control Interface: The integrated 7-inch capacitive touchscreen located on the front-right of the machine.

Emergency Stop Location: The large red mushroom button located on the top-right or front-right corner of the chassis.

Key User Interaction Points:

Nozzle Changer: The automatic tool changer area at the rear of the work table.

Feeders: The left and right side-mounted tape feeder banks.

Vision System: The upward-looking camera (for component alignment) and downward-looking camera (for PCB fiducials).
7. Unsafe Conditions – Stop Immediately If:
Section titled “7. Unsafe Conditions – Stop Immediately If:”Stop using the machine and notify Fab Lab staff immediately if any of the following occur:
- Unexpected noise, vibration, or erratic motion occurs
- Placement head moves outside programmed bounds
- Smoke, sparks, or burning odors appear
- Feeder jams or mechanical binding occurs
- Software crashes or communication is lost
- Power cable is damaged
Do not attempt to diagnose or repair major issues yourself.
8. Incident & Injury Response
Section titled “8. Incident & Injury Response”If an incident occurs:
- Stop the machine using the emergency stop if safe to do so
- Move to a safe distance
- Notify Prototyping Studio staff immediately
- For injuries, staff will follow Prototyping Studio emergency procedures
9. Acknowledgement

- You have reviewed this Safety Manual
- You understand the primary hazards and required precautions
- You will follow all Fab Lab safety rules
- You will ask staff for help if you are unsure or uncomfortable
