1. Purpose of This Safety Manual
Section titled “1. Purpose of This Safety Manual”This document outlines the minimum safety information required to operate the Bambu Lab X1 Carbon (X1C) 3D Printer in The Fab Lab. It focuses on:
- Hazards that can cause injury or damage
- Required protective measures
- Emergency response procedures
This document does not teach you how to operate the machine. Refer to the linked Operations Manual for usage instructions.
2. Who May Use This Machine
Section titled “2. Who May Use This Machine”This machine may be used by:
- Fab Lab users who have printed one object with staff present
Usage conditions:
- Printed prior to print without staff assistance
- Safety and operation manuals acknowledged
- Usage of approved materials only
3. Primary Hazards
Section titled “3. Primary Hazards”Be aware of the following hazards when using this machine:

Thermal – The printer nozzle may reach up to 300 deg. celsius and the build plate 100 deg. celsius, contact with either when heated for any time may cause burns

Mechanical – The printer contains moving axes and belts which may pinch or catch fingers/limbs

Electrical – The printer is powered by high current electrical components

Fumes / Air Quality – Some printing materials (like ABS) may produce fumes or air particles that could damage the lungs if breathed in
4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Section titled “4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)”The following PPE is required when operating this machine:
- Avoid loose clothing
- Tie back long hair
5. General Safety Rules
Section titled “5. General Safety Rules”Always follow these rules when using this machine:

Never bypass safety interlocks or guards

Do not touch the nozzle or build plate while hot

Only use approved filament materials

Never leave the machine unattended unless explicitly allowed

Never leave the printer unattended during the first layer of a print
-
Keep hands, hair, clothing, and loose items clear of moving parts

If you smell burning plastic or see smoke, stop the machine immediately

Keep the printer door closed during operation

Do not operate the machine if you are unsure how to proceed
6. Emergency Stop & Safety Features
Section titled “6. Emergency Stop & Safety Features”Know the location and function of the following before operating the machine:
- Emergency Stop: Cancel the print from the touchscreen UI
- Power Disconnect: Rear power switch near the cable, unplug cable if needed
- Safety Interlocks / Covers: Enclosed printer chamber, automatic print monitoring, thermal runaway protection
7. Unsafe Conditions – Stop Immediately If:
Section titled “7. Unsafe Conditions – Stop Immediately If:”Stop using the machine and notify Prototyping Studio staff immediately if any of the following occur:
- Unusual noises or grinding sounds occurs
- Smoke or burning smells appear
- Printer axes stop moving
- Filament jams severely inside the extruder
- Software errors prevent operation
Do not attempt to diagnose or repair major issues yourself.
8. Incident & Injury Response
Section titled “8. Incident & Injury Response”If an incident occurs:
- Stop the print using the pause option if safe to do so
- Turn off power if needed
- Move to a safe distance
- Notify Fab Lab staff immediately
- For injuries, staff will follow Prototyping Studio emergency procedures
9. Chemical & Material Safety (If Applicable)
Section titled “9. Chemical & Material Safety (If Applicable)”If this machine uses thermoplastic filament materials, including:
- PLA
- PETG
- ABS
- TPU
- Other approved/provided filaments
To clean the build plate, the following may be used:
- Dish Soap & Hot water – for textured build plates
- Isopropyl Alcohol – for smooth build plates
Safety notes:
- Only used Fab Lab approved filaments
- Some filaments may emit fumes
- Ensure the chamber door is closed for all prints
