This document outlines the minimum safety information required to operate the Raise3D E2 Dual Head 3D Printer in the Prototyping Studio. It focuses on:

  • Hazards that can cause injury or damage
  • Required protective measures
  • Emergency response procedures

This document does not teach you how to operate the machine. Refer to the linked Operations Manual for usage instructions.

This machine may be used by:

  • All Fab Lab Users

Usage conditions:

  • Staff Presence
  • Operations Manual Acknowledgement
  • No loose fitted clothing or jewelry that may get caught in pinch points

Be aware of the following hazards when using this machine:

  • Hot Surfaces - Potential to severely burn skin if heat protective gloves are neglected

        -Nozzle can reach up to 300 C and the build plate can reach 110 C

  • Moving Parts - Serious bodily injury can occur if hand or clothing is caught

        -Pinch points

        -Hot print heads move unexpectedly

  • High Voltage - Do not touch exposed circuitry

        -Power supply is not user serviceable

4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

The following PPE is required when operating this machine:

  • Heat protective gloves (optional)

        -Required for removing prints or excess material when there is potential that components may still be warm (above 35C)

        -Not required for standard observation

  • No loose fitted clothing or jewelry that may get caught in pinch points

Always follow these rules when using this machine:

  • Never bypass safety interlocks or guards
  • Keep hands, hair, clothing, and loose items out of print chamber while in use
  • Do not operate the machine if you are unsure how to proceed
  • Do not manually move print heads
  • Do not override temperature limits
  • Do not reach inside while an extruder is moving
  • Always verify nozzle and bed temperatures before reaching inside

Know the location and function of the following before operating the machine:

  • Emergency Stop:

  • Stop button on touch screen for minor cases

  • Power switch on the back for emergencies

  • Power Disconnect:

  • Next to the rear power switch on the back right of the printer

  • Nozzles and Bed will remain HOT for a duration even after power is disconnected

  • Safety Interlocks / Covers:

  • All doors must be closed for printer to operate

7. Unsafe Conditions – Stop Immediately If:

Stop using the machine and notify Prototyping Studio staff immediately if any of the following occur:

  • UNEXPECTED NOISE, MOTION, OR VIBRATION
  • SMOKE, SPARKS, ODORS, OR LEAKS
  • VISIBLE DAMAGE OR MALFUNCTION
  • LOSS OF CONTROL OR SOFTWARE ERRORS
  • DO NOT RESUME WITHOUT CONFIRMATION FROM STAFF

Do not attempt to diagnose or repair major issues yourself.

If an incident occurs:

  1. Stop the machine using the emergency stop if safe to do so
  2. Move to a safe distance
  3. Notify Fab Lab staff immediately
  4. For injuries, staff will follow Fab Lab emergency procedures
  • Filaments release particles that are not healthy to breathe over long periods of time

        -PLA/PETG (low emissions)

        -Flexibles (moderate)

        -ABS/ABA (High VOCs)  → MUST ENSURE DOORS ARE CLOSED AND FILTRATION IS ACTIVE

  • Ensure room has proper ventilation
  • Verify the printer’s air filter is correctly installed and working properly
  • All failed prints must be disposed of in trash (not recycling)
  • Do not print unknown materials
  • If a fire occurs, disconnect power if possible and use a class C fire extinguisher to exterminate the flames
