1. Purpose of This Safety Manual
Section titled “1. Purpose of This Safety Manual”This document outlines the minimum safety information required to operate the Cricut Smart Cutting Machine | Explore 4 in the Fab Lab. It focuses on:
- Hazards that can cause injury or damage
- Required protective measures
- Emergency response procedures
This document does not teach you how to operate the machine. Refer to the linked Operations Manual for usage instructions.
2. Who May Use This Machine
Section titled “2. Who May Use This Machine”This machine may be used by:
- GENERAL USER GROUP – Fab Lab Users
Usage conditions:
- REQUIRED CONDITION – Safety Manual Acknowledged
- REQUIRED CONDITION – Fully Read The Operations Manual
3. Primary Hazards
Section titled “3. Primary Hazards”Be aware of the following hazards when using this machine:
- Sharp Object + Moving Parts – The machines uses a sharp tip to cut the materials that moves do not keep hands near this portion of the machine during use
- Potential Overheating – If in use for an extended period of time the machine may overheat
- Electrical – Do not bring liquids near the machine it is connected to an outlet
4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
Section titled “4. Required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)”- No special PPE is required beyond standard Fab Lab attire.
5. General Safety Rules
Section titled “5. General Safety Rules”Always follow these rules when using this machine:
- Never bypass safety interlocks or guards
- Never leave the machine unattended unless explicitly allowed
- Keep hands, hair, clothing, and loose items clear of moving parts
- Do not operate the machine if you are unsure how to proceed
- Do not keep hands near the machine when a job is running
- Do not use materials that are not meant to be used in this machine
6. Emergency Stop & Safety Features
Section titled “6. Emergency Stop & Safety Features”Know the location and function of the following before operating the machine:

Emergency Stop:

There is a pause button, button 9, on the right side of the machine, an image of this is in the operations manual.

As a last resort you may unplug the machine and notify a staff member.

Power Disconnect:

The power connection is on the lower right side on the back of the machine

Safety Interlocks / Covers:

There is a button with raised circles on the left hand side of the machine, button 12 as mentioned in the operations manual, this physically opens the machine to close the machine you must push the cover back into place
7. Unsafe Conditions – Stop Immediately If:
Section titled “7. Unsafe Conditions – Stop Immediately If:”Stop using the machine and notify Fab Lab staff immediately if any of the following occur:
- UNEXPECTED NOISE, MOTION, OR VIBRATION
- SMOKE, SPARKS, ODORS
- VISIBLE DAMAGE OR MALFUNCTION
- LOSS OF CONTROL OR SOFTWARE ERRORS
Do not attempt to diagnose or repair major issues yourself.
8. Incident & Injury Response
Section titled “8. Incident & Injury Response”If an incident occurs:
- Stop the machine using the emergency stop if safe to do so
- Move to a safe distance
- Notify Fab Lab staff immediately
- For injuries, staff will follow Fab Lab emergency procedures
9. Acknowledgement
Section titled “9. Acknowledgement”By using this machine, you acknowledge that:
- You have reviewed this Safety Manual
- You understand the primary hazards and required precautions
- You will follow all Fab Lab safety rules
- You will ask staff for help if you are unsure or uncomfortable
